Maggie's Thoughts on Election

The election results are in. As an international student in the United States who has an interest in American politics, I made it a point to watch all three debates, as well as election night coverage. I have also tried to catch up on some of the news and updates on social media and Hofstra’s news site, as well as from my own experience as a debate volunteer.
The night after the election, I drove to New York City to attend “The Women Who Made New York” - a free talk held at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. The panel started with an introduction of the four speakers and a brief introduction from Julie Scelfo, the author of the new book The Women Who Made New York. Later on, three women talked about their mothers, who all led political lives. Shirley Chisholm, Bella Abzug and Geraldine Ferraro are the three women mentioned in the book who were remembered that night. Shirley Chisholm was the first African American woman elected to the U.S. Congress. Bella Abzug, nicknamed “Battling Bella,” is a lawyer, social activist and the leader of Women’s Movement. Geraldine Ferraro is the first female vice presidential candidate representing a major American party.
This is a really interesting time to be civically engaged, and I feel so lucky to be a part of it all.

Big Data Analytics and Changing Business Practices

Farrokh Nasri, professor of informative systems and business analytics at the Frank G. Zarb School of Business, recently moderated a discussion about the intersection of big data, business, and technology that brought together experts from a variety of industries.

Big data offers “new opportunities for competitive advantage. It unlocks the predictive potential of data and helps improve operational efficiency, financial performance, and strategic decisions,” he said.

Data analytics, often referred to as business analytics or big data analytics, is a reformation of data analysis techniques. The increase in accessibility, accuracy, fast pace advancement, and cost effectiveness are all contributing factors to the importance of using data analytics across all industries.

Today, companies can decipher consumer habits and gather a series of algorithmic profiles that can provide clues to what products will appeal to them. Timothy Cecere, chief talent officer and director of human resources at GroupM Worldwide, emphasized how this use of data analytics is especially useful in advertising. “Advertising agents want a happy client with sales going up, Cecere said “We are moving toward a social listening world where the most valuable brands will utilize analytics at their core, with the goal of using data to better understand and serve their consumers.”

At the Krasnoff Quality Management Institute (KQMI), Dr. Yosef Dlugacz, senior vice president and chief of clinical quality, education, and research for Northwell Health, emphasized that data provides a preventative approach to health care. “We analyze data and transform it into evidence-based measurements to provide accurate outcomes,” he said. He added that big data can help educate health care professionals about vital patient history, which allows for a transparency into the clients’ needs when it comes to quality care. “The goal is to process information as quickly as possible to facilitate the best possible outcome for patients and the future of medicine.”

Diane Garnick, managing director and chief income strategist for TIAA and a Zarb alumna, outlined  how data has evolved  over the years. In phase one, raw data and theories transitioned from paper form toward the beginning of computerized systems. Forecasting consumer wants became key, and information was broken down by generational groups. Phase two was the introduction of semi-structured data –  data that could be sorted. However, in this phase there was very little predictive power. Phase three she refers to as “zip code economics.” Garnick said that a “zip code is one of the most important data points about an individual.” The geographic area in which a person lives can help predict what their needs and wants might be. The most valuable tool for a successful businessperson is access to data. Without it, Ms. Garnick says, “you’re just another guy with an opinion.”

Vice president of technology at Avis and a Zarb alumnus, John A. Turato, provided valuable data analytics from an engineering standpoint. He emphasized Moore’s Law, which states that the computing power of a single microchip should double approximately every two years as scientists figure out how to fit increasingly more information into a shrinking space.

Turato related this philosophy to Avis and described how data analytics helps drive the company’s sales. “The level of electronic integration has increased,” he said. “Cars are connected more now than ever (i.e. Wi-Fi, self-driving). Accurate data analytics affects the pricing of cars and amount of time consumers take when shopping for the cars that they want. At Avis, and in general car sales, it is essential for those behind-the-scenes to get involved with the data, and do the analysis required to obtain those key insights.”

The panel closed with a discussion by Michael Rappa, a distinguished professor and director of the Institute for Advanced Analytics at North Carolina State University. He explained that there is an emerging data ecosystem, creating phenomenal change. Rapidly progressing electronic data creates an urgency to keep up with the masses, while simultaneously keeping personal information secure. “In today’s digital world, we have so much information that must be protected,” Rappa said. “The more data we are able to gain, the more we want to contain, thus, creating the need to delete data as capacity becomes full.” He highlighted the fact that we are “living in a data ecosystem, but [we are] clueless about how it works. Consumer-driven industries value data because of the levels of insight it offers, and it is critical that businesses have the knowledge and expertise to facilitate the extraction and understanding of those key characteristics.”

他重点强调了Moore’s Law(Moore’s Law指出,在一个日益缩小的空间, 一个单独的芯片的计算能力应该在每两年双倍提高)。

这次圆桌会议以Michael Rappa(北卡罗莱纳州立大学数据分析所的执行官以及教授)的讨论结束。

Bear's Bio

Hi Everyone! I am Bear! I am a passionate, optimistic person studying marketing at Hofstra University. I previously got my bachelor’s degree in international business. I work with Maggie on Hofstra’s Weibo and have some work experiences in social media and marketing research. My strengths are organizing, communicating and leadership.

As a marketer, I learned how to deal with data and organize it well from my working experience. For what I am doing now, I keep learning how to manage my time better and get knowledge of the world of public relations. I gained a better understanding of what’s behind social media and that’s so cool. I love being a social media person, and I love being part of Hofstra that makes me so proud!

My favorite restaurant on Long Island is Jane Café, which is Korean food. The owner is a really nice lady, and my recommendation is the seafood tofu soup, it’s so good! Also, my favorite place on Long Island is Jones Beach. I enjoy walking on the boardwalk near the sea and feeling so cozy and relaxed.

Maggie's Bio

Hi! My name is Li Pan. I’m a graduate student studying accounting at Hofstra University, as well as a Chinese Social Media Assistant in the Office of University Relations. I write a lot of blogs on Sina Weibo about my travels and own personal experiences in college, but I also help to tell the stories of other Chinese students who attend Hofstra. In addition to the blog, I also volunteered for the first presidential debate that was held here at Hofstra on September 26. During the day, I went around Broadcast Plaza and Issues Alley and took photos and videos of the student experience. I was also fortunate enough to be interviewed by China News Services after the debate.

I have a lot of interests: cooking, traveling, movies, music, learning new things… and I’m a big fan of being organized. Pop music by Adele and Lana Del Rey are my favorites these years. Except for the fact that I ask myself to listen to music produced by instruments like piano and cello, I listen to jazz and world music sometimes too. Oh, and I like making friends, as well. Upon graduation, I hope to find a position in an accounting advisory firm where I will be happy to utilize the skills acquired and the knowledge learned here at Hofstra. I bought a car recently, and I’m very excited to learn more about my new neighborhood on Long Island.

Some people describe me as “capable” and “intelligent.” One of my favorite quotes is by Thomas A. Edison: "Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up."

Food in China versus food in the United States

While the food in the Student Center here at Hofstra is great (the reason why I purchased meal plans for the whole year in my first year at Hofstra), it's interesting to compare food in China to food in the U.S.

I found it really easy to compare the food because people in China and people in the U.S. eat very differently. First of all, chopsticks are used in China while knives and forks are used in the United States on dinner tables. During festivals, people in China eat…

Shanghai hairy crabs during Mid-Autumn Festival
 Dumplings during New Year
 Yuan Xiao during Lantern Festival

When looking at U.S. festivals (or holidays), pumpkin dishes are common during Thanksgiving season.
Pumpkin pie

On a Thanksgiving dinner table, a big roasted turkey is a way to celebrate family gathering. As a huge foodie, I like to go to restaurants as much as I like to cook at home. In about two months, Thanksgiving is going to be here so I will watch out for Starbucks pumpkin spice latte. Thanksgiving is only one of the many holidays celebrated here in the U.S. Although the food can be different, it's all delicious to me! I love trying new things, and I hope you do the same!

Travled back with pictures and memories

Hello blog readers! Now when everyone is busy with the beginning of this semester, studying and recuperating from the presidential debate, I’m still reminiscing on the time when my parents visited me in the United States AND my trip to South America. Below are some photos from my trip. Enjoy!

Summer Olympics in Rio

The Summer Olympics were a lot of fun to watch this year. The Games are held every four years, and there are a variety of sports featured. This year’s Summer Olympics were hosted in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The opening ceremony was on August 5th, and the Games ended on August 21.

On 12th, I watched the Men’s 100-Meter Butterfly Swim final on television. When it comes to sports, I only know a few professional athletes, and Michael Phelps is one of them. Sadly he didn’t win a gold medal in this round for the United States, while a young Joseph Schooling from Singapore took the win.

The Olympics really bring people together. Everyone shares in the joy of cheering for the human spirit, pushing limits and overcoming obstacles. I highly recommend following the Summer Olympics, if you aren’t already. Watch clips on YouTube if you missed a few games, and don’t forget to share with us who your favorite athletes and events to watch are!

Dr. Christina Lacey Receives Grant from NASA

Dr. Christina Lacey, associate professor of physics and astronomy, is co-investigator on a $60,000 grant from NASA for a proposal, “What Makes Radio-detected and Optically-detected Supernova Remnants in NGC6946 Different?” Dr. Lacey’s successful grant allocates her observer time with the Hubble Space Telescope.

Dr. Lacey has been on the Hofstra faculty since 2008. One of her research interests is focused on supernova remnants in nearby galaxies. She is on sabbatical this fall but will be on campus working with students on radio astronomy research.

Zarb School Ranks Among Poets & Quants Top 100 U.S. MBA Programs

Zarb School Ranks Among Poets & Quants Top 100 U.S. MBA Programs

by Marilou R. Giammona | Office of University Relations

The Frank G. Zarb School of Business ranked 88th on the 2015 Poets & Quants Top 100 U.S. MBA Programs. The school jumped nine places from last year’s ranking of 97th.

Unlike other rankings, the Poets & Quants composite list combines the latest five most influential business school rankings in the world: U.S. News & World Report, Forbes, Bloomberg Businessweek, The Financial Times, and The Economist. Instead of simply averaging the five, Poets & Quants gives each ranking a separate weight, according to P&Q’s view of their authority. U.S. News is given a weight of 35 percent; Forbes, 25 percent; both the Financial Times and Bloomberg Businessweek are given a 15 weight; and The Economist, 10 percent.

Hofstra ranked 41st in the nation for best online MBA Program (U.S. News & World Report 2015 Best Online Programs), was ranked 58th on the Forbes 2015 Best Business Schools list, and was listed 74th for part‐time MBA programs nationally (Bloomberg BusinessWeek 2015 ranking). In addition, the Zarb School ranked 97th nationwide for part‐time MBA program (U.S. News & World Report 2017 edition), and 6th for best online MBA program for 2016 (Affordable Colleges Online: The Best Online MBA Programs 2015‐2016).

The Zarb School, which celebrated its 50th anniversary this year, is among only 10 percent of business schools to earn accreditation in both business and accounting from AACSB International, a rigorous certification that attests to overall quality and how well the school prepares its graduates for today’s global business environment.

My parents are visiting me from China, and one of the places I took them during their time here was to Montauk! It was a tough choice because of the many different beaches on Long Island and around Hofstra, but Montauk was a great choice. We filled water bottles, packed swimsuits, towels, snacks and umbrellas, and hit the road!

As we approached the Hamptons, I started noticing designer boutiques and souvenir shops everywhere.  It was really cool! Soon we arrived at an information center. I gathered two local maps, a concert schedule from the front desk and received a postcard as a free gift. I went on driving to a nearby beach. We saw a deer in a parking lot – it was so cute.

Finally, we found a beach, and there were already people playing in the sand. The sun was beating down on us, so sunscreen was a must. The ocean water was satisfyingly cold. My dad went in the water to swim, and my mom and I relaxed on the beach.

This summer day trip was a lot of fun and really special. Maybe I’ll take my parents to Jones Beach next!

Jones Beach. - M

Going Shopping

Shopping in Long Island is really great. For serious shoppers, Roosevelt Field Mall is a good place to start, and it is just a 10-minute drive from campus. Roosevelt Field is located on 630 Old Country Road in Garden City. It opens from Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to as late as 9:30 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. This week, I happened to be in the need of a light winter jacket, so I drove to Roosevelt Field Mall  to shop.

First of all, I know there are affordable winter jackets available at Uniqlo all year around. So I went directly to the escalator and went upstairs. Uniqlo is a Japanese brand that promotes “the Japanese values of simplicity, quality and longevity.” Entering the store, I basically see lines and lines of monochromatic short-sleeve and long-sleeve shirts and jackets. Immediately I saw one purple ultra-light down jacket hanging along with some red, black and gray jackets. I thought to myself, "Hey, this is my jacket!" So I picked it. And then, I went on to pick a long-sleeve shirt, along with another two or three items and went to the cashier to pay.My experience shopping at Roosevelt Field Mall is always great. This mall has everything - clothing stores, cosmetics stores, electronic stores, restaurants, a food court, a movie theater and more. It's a nice place to shop, hang out with friends, or browse during a study break. Your options are limitless.

About the Author: Karla Schuster, Assistant VP of University Relations

Hofstra University will host the first presidential debate on September 26, 2016, the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) announced today.

“Hofstra University is honored to be called on to host the first presidential debate on Sept. 26, 2016. This is an extraordinary privilege and responsibility,” said Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz. “We greatly appreciate the faith shown in us by the Commission on Presidential Debates, and we have begun preparations for a very successful debate.”

Hofstra University hosted presidential debates in 2008 between then-Senator Barack Obama and Senator John McCain and in 2012 between President Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney.  It will be the first university to host three consecutive presidential debates.

Hofstra had agreed to serve an alternate 2016 debate site, and was tapped by the Commission after Wright State University in Ohio announced it was withdrawing as the host institution for the first debate.

“Hofstra University served very successfully as a presidential debate site in 2012,” the Commission said in a statement. “On September 23, 2015, the Commission announced that Hofstra University had agreed to serve as an alternate site this debate cycle if needed. The Commission looks forward to working with Hofstra once again.”

The debate itself is produced and sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates, a non-partisan, non-profit organization, which controls all aspects of debate production.

All tickets allocated to Hofstra University from the Commission will be distributed via lottery to current students in the days before the debate, as recommended by the CPD and consistent with past practices of debate hosts.  Tickets will not be available through Hofstra University personnel, and tickets are not available through any means at this point in time.

“Congratulations to Hofstra University and its President Stuart Rabinowitz for securing a presidential debate which will boost the local economy and promote the region,” said Kevin Law, president and CEO of the Long Island Association.

Teamwork(团队合作)和cooperation(联合作业)在学校里非常被重视。

Spring Break package.

Spring Semester has finally started with a full schedule. As much as we know spring is around the corner, you still see winter coats and snow boots everywhere on campus. The weather in Long Island gets really changeable and we just had one of the biggest snowstorms here.
Spring semester is supposed to be shorter than the fall semester. We have sixteen weeks of classes and Spring Recess. I am looking forward to many events, festivals, friend gatherings and celebrations in the future. Stay tuned!
