Provost Receives Digital Technology Fellowship(霍夫斯特拉大学教务长参加ACAO数字科技教育伙伴项目)

Hofstra University Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Gail Simmons is one of 32 chief academic officers selected to participate in a national higher education program that is exploring how digital technology may increase student retention and academic success, especially among those who are first generation, low income.

霍夫斯特拉大学教务长兼学术副校长Gail Simmons作为32位首席学术官员之一被选中参加国家高等教育项目,目的是为了探索怎么利用数字科技帮助提高学生们的在学率和学术成功,此项目特别旨在帮助第一代移民、低收入群体学生们。

The Association of Chief Academic Officers’ (ACAO) Digital Fellows Program is designed to provide critical information, effective resources, and tested strategies to help chief academic officers and their faculty understand and adopt high-quality digital courseware. Supported by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the ACAO Fellows Program will additionally curate a rich, public archive of resources on digital learning and related issues to serve the community of chief academic officers (CAOs) who want to leverage digital curricular materials to foster student engagement and enhance learning at their institutions.

“I am honored to have been chosen as an ACAO Digital Fellow. There are many faculty across Hofstra who have adopted digital learning technology in their classrooms to maximize our students’ learning,” said Provost Simmons. “As a digital fellow, I will work to place Hofstra on the leading edge of digital learning technology, even as we re-emphasize our personal, hands on approach to education. Hofstra can become a leader in ‘high tech-high touch’ education for 21st century students.”


“We were delighted with the response from the CAO community to the fellowship opportunity,” said Laura Niesen de Abruna, principal investigator for the ACAO Digital Fellows Program and provost at York College of Pennsylvania. “The 32 men and women selected as ACAO Digital Fellows represent a wide variety of campuses and bring a rich portfolio of personal, professional, and professorial experience and expertise to this initiative.”

Dr. Gail Simmons has served as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs of Hofstra University since 2015. She came to Hofstra from Manhattanville College in Westchester, where she served as chief academic officer, as well as a professor of biology. Prior to her tenure at Manhattanville, Simmons was dean of the Division of Science and Technology at the College of Staten Island of The City University of New York (CUNY). She also served as founding dean of the School of Science at The College of New Jersey and as associate dean of the Division of Science at The City College of CUNY, where she began her career as a member of the faculty.

Chartered in 2013, the vision of the ACAO is to provide professional development and networking opportunities to all individuals who are responsible for the leadership of academic affairs in institutions of higher education.  The year-long fellowship opportunity with the ACAO includes four meetings (or convenings) of the Fellowship recipients for workshops on digital learning. The Gates Foundation grant also includes support for individual campus projects focused on digital learning.

International Tour Hits Home(国际辅导员的美国大学访问旅行)

High school counselors from all over the world recently came to Hofstra as part of the eighth annual Metro New York International Counselor Tour.
“It’s our hope that the visiting counselors will leave with a sense of “Hofstra Pride” and know that their students are welcome here,” said Dean of International Recruitment Steven Richman.

Counselors arrived in New York on Sunday, June 25 with an opening reception at Fordham School of Law. Each day was spent visiting two universities in the Metro New York area. The counselors arrived at Hofstra on Monday, June 26 for an afternoon filled with campus tours and a student panel led by some of Hofstra’s Pride Guides.
辅导员们在625日周日抵达纽约,并在福特汉姆法学院参加了开幕仪式。每天他们都会访问两所大纽约地区的大学。辅导员们在626日周一抵达了霍夫斯特拉大学,他们在下午的时间参与了校园游览,以及一个由“Hofstra Pride”游览员组织的学生座谈。
“This is an amazing experience. It helps you to better identify if a school is a right fit for a student, and it allows you to see some things a website can’t show you,” said Nikolaos Tsachtanis, a college counselor at Pinewood American International School of Thessaloniki in Greece.

Hofstra has been involved with this program since its inception back in 2010.
“It’s been a very fruitful participation,” said Hofstra Admission Counselor Jane LaRocco. “I’m always in awe that these are 22 perfect strangers but by the time we do a closing reception, they’re a solid network of advocates for participating universities.”

SEAS Seniors Showcase Their Expertise(工程与计算机科学展示会)

A pair of computer science students who proposed a new way to protect personal devices from cyber threats won first place in the DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science’s Annual Senior Project Showcase.
George Roussis and Kendra Campbell’s project “Honeypot Based Group Monitoring and Protection” would enable networks of any size to protect themselves from threats by deploying a number of passive honeypots, a malware detecting software, as probes inside the network. Once an attack is discovered, a honeypot reports the network identity and malicious attack signatures to a central server so that all other network users can access the blacklist of attackers and protect their personal devices.

 “Many people don’t run antivirus or security software on their personal devices. These connected devices have the potential to adversely affect entire networks,” Roussis explained.   “By adding another layer of security, system networks would have the ability to better defend themselves requiring no additional antivirus software downloads.”
The Senior Project Showcase is an opportunity for computer science and engineering students to present their senior projects to a panel of local industry related professionals.   Thirty-two students presented at this year’s competition.  Projects were scored on a scale of 1 to 5 based on their technological or scientific significance, the methodology for solving the specified problem, the ingenuity and originality of the proposed solution, whether their poster displayed the work accomplished clearly and the student’s ability to explain their ideas.
Sina Rabbany, dean of the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science, congratulated the students on their work.  “The wide array of projects showcase the breadth of technical creativity on display by our students.”

Second place was awarded to computer science major, Marvin Dizon for “EyeDetect”, an interactive tool designed to support video surveillance technology by analyzing video footage and identifying human shapes.  Practical applications for EyeDetect include preventing fire hazards by monitoring the number of people in a particular area or helping retailers to accurately predict the foot traffic of shoppers at different times of day.

Dizon said that working on his senior project helped him develop soft skills that he hopes will benefit him in his career.  “I definitely gained a lot of experience in terms of working collaboratively with someone.  I’m also excited for what the future holds for Computer Vision and Virtual Reality.”
Other engineering and computer science projects showcased at this year’s event ranged from an alternate design for ebband flow hydroponic plant systems to a cost-effective approach for lowering the number of Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) train and subway fatalities.

暑期研究生活动即将到来---Upcoming Graduate Events

Hofstra will host a Graduate Studies Open House on Tuesday, July 11. The event, sponsored by the Office of Graduate Admissions, will include presentations from current faculty, information about Residential Programs and The Career Center, and a tour of our 244-acre campus.


Officials from the Office of Graduate Admissions also will be available to answer questions about programs, financial aid and the application process.


Advance registration for Graduate Open House is recommended. Check-in begins at 6 p.m. at the Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center, North Campus. Students interested in nursing and education programs should check in at Hagedorn Hall.

同学们也可以于晚上6点后Hofstra的学生中心注册。对护理和教育项目感兴趣的同学也可在Hagedorn Hall 注册。

An additional Graduate Open House will be held on August 8.


If you’re not ready to make the jump into a master’s- or doctoral-level program but you want to get started, you can enroll on-site as a non-matriculated student.  As a non-matriculated student, you may complete up to 12 credits before enrolling in a degree program.
